Flintlastic Roofing Spotlight: SA Self-Adhering Roofing

Why is Flintlastic roofing our top choice, and why might you choose modified bitumen for your next roofing project? Let’s take a look!

When it comes to low-slope and commercial roofing systems, modified bitumen doesn’t tend to get as much attention as other membrane-style materials such as EPDM and TPO. However, self-adhering (SA) modified bitumen is quite versatile and offers a host of benefits. Here at CJ Roofing, our modified bitumen roofing of choice is the CertainTeed Flintlastic SA system.

What is Flintlastic roofing?

CertainTeed Flintlastic SA roofing is a premium self-adhering modified bitumen system used in low-slope roofing applications. Flintlastic roofing is composed of a nailable or self-adhering ply base with a top mineral layer. This top layer is available in a wide variety of styles and colors.

While most commonly used in commercial applications, the mineral finish means Flintlastic roofing is well-suited to cover low-slope residential roofing needs as well. The surface layer is also available with reflective CoolStar granules to reflect heat and allow for greater energy efficiency.

Installing a Flintlastic SA modified bitumen roofing system

Installation of a self-adhering modified bitumen system is fairly straightforward. Before installation, it’s important to properly store the Flintlastic roofing and ensure that all requirements on the roof deck (such as drainage) are met. During installation, the roofer first prepares the substrate, removing all dust, dirt, oils, or other debris that could interfere with adhesion.

The roofer unrolls the material over the substrate, and then they will typically apply pressure with a roller. Consult with your roofer to ensure they’re fully prepared to work with the CertainTeed Flintlastic roofing system.

Why choose a self-adhering modified bitumen roof?

A complete self-adhering modified bitumen roofing system, such as the CertainTeed Flintlastic SA, offers numerous advantages over other common forms of low-slope roofing. One key advantage is the ease of installation. Where built-up roofing is very labor-intensive to install, and single-ply roofing systems typically require adhesives or torches for proper installation, installation of a Flintlastic roofing requires minimal equipment and manpower.

This results in generally lower labor costs and quicker installation. Modified bitumen is also highly versatile in terms of appearance. Where TPO and EPDM are typically only available in black or white, modified bitumen comes with a wide variety of mineral finishes.
